What is Radon Gas?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas, that is known to cause cancer. Increased Radon levels can be found in many homes across the U.S, putting it’s occupants at risk. Radon gas cannot be seen, smelled or tasted, however the Surgeon General’s office have estimated that as many as 20,000 lung cancer deaths are caused each year by Radon Gas. Some locations have higher risks for Radon levels in the home, and the US EPA estimates as many as 8 million homes throughout the US have elevated levels of Radon.

How does Radon enter a home?

Radon primarily enters a home through the ground, meaning the foundation, crawl space or basement. Radon can enter through many paths that go from the ground into the home, some of which include:

  • cracks in foundation/crawl space/basement
  • drains
  • sump pumps
  • construction joints
  • loose fitting pipes

How to know if you have Radon in your home?

The only way to know if Radon is present in your home, is to have it tested by a professional. Typically, it takes years of Radon exposure for someone to feel it’s effects. If the testing results do show high concentrations or radon, professional mitigation is recommended by the EPA.
